Nobody could have imagined that a character who first appeared as a costumed participant of a country fair parade featuring Lucasfilm, who next appeared on a television special, who then appeared briefly in the next two installments of the original “Star Wars” trilogy, would then become a breakout popular character in the wider world of the Galaxy Far, Far Away. It is none other than the helmeted rocket-packed bounty hunter Boba Fett, who hauled away a frozen Han Solo and later fell into a sand monster’s mouth. And now, he might just get a “Star Wars Story” of his own.
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Lucasfilm is ready to go whole hog in developing more installments of the “Star Wars Story”, single-movie spinoffs from, thus far, points in time in between the prequel and original “Star Wars” trilogies. The latest being put up for serious brainstorming now is a movie about Boba Fett, the galaxy’s most recognizable bounty hunter. The news comes only a day prior to the premiere of one such film, “Solo”, on Friday May 25. In a way, this project follows “Solo” more than the first spinoff “Rogue One”, in that it focuses on one character.
Thus far, almost everything about the Boba Fett “Star Wars Story” movie is still up in the air, but Lucasfilm did float one name that has been tapped to work on the first stages of production. It is none other than James Mangold, whose past experience in big-budget SFX action movies includes X-Men spinoffs “The Wolverine” (2013) and “Logan” (2017) for 20thCentury Fox. Mangold is writing the story for the Fett movie, and will also serve as director when filming starts. Another Fox “X-Men” writer-producer, Simon Kinberg, was also mentioned in unconfirmed rumors to be working on the project.
Boba Fett was historically first seen during a Country Fair parade in San Anselmo, a year after the premiere of the first “Star Wars” movie in 1977. His costume actor was part of the parade’s delegation for Lucasfilm, which has its office near the town, and marched next to a similarly-costumed Darth Vader. Fett then appeared later in 1978 at the “Star Wars Holiday Special” as a bounty hunter working for Vader, while his first cinematic appearance was in “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980), this time with Jabba the Hutt as his employer. He supposedly died in “Return of the Jedi” (1983), but various (de-canonized) novels and comic books have imagined him as having survived to get into further adventures.
No further information has been given on Boba Fett’s film. “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, is now showing on cinemas.
