The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise is a juggernaut of interwoven storytelling that reaches mythic proportions and transcends even to non-big screen formats. On its first decade it has managed to earn insane amounts on the box office, enough to put several of its installments on the “highest-grossing films of all time” list. All of this success could be traced to the warm reception gotten by the first movie in the franchise, 2008’s “Iron Man” starring Robert Downey Jr. Now, a part of that historical foundation has gone missing as it is recently revealed that one of the costumes in the film was stolen.
We have it from The Hollywood Reporter that a costume armored suit used in the first “Iron Man” movie by Robert Downey Jr. has disappeared from its storage at a warehouse in Pacoima. The fact was only noticed and reported to the Los Angeles Police Department by Tuesday, May 8, according to LAPD spokesperson Rosario Hererra. Said costume was, in the film, the Mark-III or third Iron Man armor developed by Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark, famously depicted as in its original comic book version with a bright metallic “hot-rod” red and gold color scheme.
Eyewitness accounts have it that the Iron Man costume was last seen stored in the warehouse as early as February. The warehouse owners who alerted the police to the theft have a suspicion that the prop powered armor may have already been lost from storage since April. So far the LAPD have no leads or suspects on who may have removed the costume, which is valued at around $325,000 due to both the materials used and the finished prop value. The investigation into the missing Iron Man costume is ongoing.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics in 1963, Tony Stark alias Iron Man is a prominent and influential character in the shared universe of the Marvel comic-book characters. However, his popularity with the readers was, along with “Captain America”, “The Incredible Hulk” and the “Fantastic Four”, a pale shadow compared to the juggernaut success of the “X-Men” and all characters related to the title. All this changed when Robert Downey Jr. played Stark in 2008 and elevated him to mainstream popularity, followed by the other characters used in what would then become the MCU. The veteran actor will reprise the role in “Avengers 4” on 2019.
