OSCAR NOMINEE Sampler for 90th ACADEMY AWARDS this March 4th

Next Sunday, March 4, the Academy Awards will be given out for the 90th time. For the second time in a row, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will be on hosting duty for the ceremony to be held in Hollywood’s Dolby Theater in LA, about two months after Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” made its world premiere there. And perhaps, like all the recent other awards ceremonies that have been held in the months before, politics and the nasty allegations in the film industry will be brought to center stage. But let’s not go into that; the Oscar nominees are out.
Entertainment Weekly has put together a list of all the films, actors and actresses, directors and so on who have been nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a chance to bring home an Oscar statuette or more for their performance or achievements. The nominees were first named starting Tuesday of last week. The Best Picture bets number a goodly nine, from the sci-fi romance “The Shape of Water”, the dramatic “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, the horror flick “Get Out” up until the World War II epics “Dunkirk” and “Darkest Hour” among several more choices.
Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), and Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) are three of the five nominees for Best Actor. Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) are among those vying for Best Actress. Supporting Role nominees include (Actor) Christopher Plummer, Woody Harrelson and Willem Dafoe; (Actress) Octavia Spencer, Laurie Metcalf and veteran singer-rapper Mary J. Blige. Best Director is a fierce contest between veterans like Guillermo Del Toro (“The Shape of Water”) and Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”), and some 2017 cinematic heavy-hitters like Jordan Peele (“Get Out”).
The other Oscar categories have some choice names among their respective nominees. A Marvel Comic character gets in the Best Adapted Screenplay race with “Logan” (Scott Frank, James Mangold and Michael Green). The long-in-coming sequel “Blade Runner 2049” has a hand in five “minor categories such as Best Production Design (against “Beauty and the Beast”), Best Cinematography (against “Dunkirk”) and Best Visual Effects (against “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”). Disney-Pixar’s emotional family masterpiece “Coco” is in for Best Original Song (“Remember Me”) and Best Animated Feature Film, the latter category being lambasted for not including “The LEGO Batman Movie”.
ABC will air the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday primetime at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Among the awards presenters are the likes of Mark Hamill, Chadwick Boseman, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Oscar Isaac and Gal Gadot, for starters. Expect some performances from Mary J. Blige, Andra Day, and Gael Garcia Bernal.
