Back in 2003, Warner Bros. Animation changed the superhero landscape on TV with “Teen Titans”, an animated series created by Glen Murakami which aired on The WB and Cartoon Network. The critically acclaimed show focused on the titular DC team of teenaged superheroes, based on the comic-book roster of said team from the 1980s. Following five seasons and a TV movie finale, the series gave way to a comedic spinoff “Teen Titans GO!” which featured cartoonish super-deformed characters in slapstick mini-adventures. Divisive the reception of this show may have been, it is now getting its own movie, premiering in cinemas.
As USA Today tells it, “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” is gearing up for its cinematic release by the middle of the year, and the Warner Animation Group is giving the film spinoff some heavy vocal firepower in terms of its additional voice talent. While the voice actors for the Teen Titans are reprising their roles from the show (as they reprised from the original serious 2003 version), WAG has decided to include the likes of Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage, singer Halsey and rapper Lil Yachty in the supporting cast. Respectively, they voice Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern.
The “Teen Titans GO!” movie executive producer Sam Register remarked on how the DC Universe’s stable of superheroes has individually made an impact on the franchise’s fans. “We felt a great responsibility to find a voice for each character that would not only suit the role,” he says, “but the playful tone of the Titans, and we’re thrilled with our cameo cast.”
Nowhere is this more evident than in the casting of Cage, probably the biggest Hollywood fan of Superman. He almost starred in the role in Tim Burton’s cancelled “Superman Lives” back in 1998, and his son is named Kal-El, after the hero’s original name on his home-world Krypton.
The plot of the film takes liberties with the fourth wall, wherein the Teen Titans find out that other – bigger – DC superheroes have made it big with Hollywood movies about themselves. Hoping to cash in on that fame, Robin (Scott Menville), Starfire (Hynden Walch), Raven (Tara Strong), Cyborg (Khary Payton) and Beast Boy (Greg Cipes) seek a filmmaker to make a movie about them.
They find director Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell) who might be interested in the project, but trouble lurks in the form of Robin’s nemesis Slade Wilson (Will Arnett) and giant villain Balloon Man (James Corden). Hijinks ensue.
An initial trailer for “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” was first released back in January, and it will premiere in cinemas on July 27.
