First TRAILER for “MARY POPPINS RETURNS” Gets MEME Treatment Due to MCU

You have got to hand it to Disney; when they feel like it they could flood the cinemas of the world with scores of movies like nobody’s business. Yes, they have the three MCU films this 2018 alone from their Marvel Studios subsidiary; but they’ve got enough upcoming releases with their own name on them as well. “Christopher Robin” starring Ewan McGregor and Jim Cummings this August is not the only powerful nostalgia trip the House of Mouse has lined up this year. There’s also a sequel to their immortal 1964 musical “Mary Poppins”, and it has a trailer out.
Variety has it that the first trailer for “Mary Poppins Returns” came out at the start of this week on Oscar Sunday, March 4. Airing on a commercial break of the 90th Academy Awards ceremony, the teaser reveals a bare minimum of details on the movie, beyond what was already revealed when it was first announced last year. It does however, finally give audiences the first good long look at two of its main stars, Emily Blunt picking up Julie Andrews’ original role as the magical nanny Mary Poppins, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, apprentice to Dick Van Dyke’s Bert.
The trailer shows a dreary look at Cherry Tree Lane, home address of the Banks Family whom Mary helped long ago. Some 25 years have passed from that time in Edwardian London, and much appears to have been forgotten. A kite in a trash can on the curb is suddenly picked up by a strong wind, passing by Jack’s bicycle and into a park, where he helps a boy fly it into the grey sky. Suddenly the dark clouds part to reveal a nanny with suitcase in hand, holding onto the kite with the other. Mary Poppins has indeed returned.
Mere days after the trailer debut of “Mary Poppins Returns” however, Comicbook.com reports that a meme has taken hold of it, due to a viral line of dialogue from 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” according to. There, space bounty hunter Yondu (Michael Rooker) was compared by Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) to Mary Poppins after he floats in the air by holding onto his flying Yakra arrow. Yondu then declares, “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” Jokesters have edited the “Mary Poppins Returns” teaser to replace Blunt’s presence with Rooker as Yondu, leading to online laughs. They’re both under Disney after all.
The movie also stars Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as two of the Banks children from the original all grown up, along with Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury. Dick Van Dyke also cameos. “Mary Poppins Returns” premieres from Disney on Christmas Day, 2018.
