There’s really not much more to say in order to described the juggernaut of popular support that catapulted Republican candidate Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States. They can be loud, opinionated, blunt and proud. At their absolute worst however they can be racist, supremacist, ruthless and borderline violent, especially with their preferred targets being either minority peoples or members of the media. They tend to operate as if the excess of their potentially harmful actions were done so with the tacit blessing of the man they voted for, who they venerate as if he were a God- Emperor.
Just this Friday December 16 Trump issued a statement during a speech in Orlando, Florida that may well be his most comprehensive admission on just how out of control his more militant fan base can get in his name. According to The Huffington Post, on this leg of his post-election “thank-you” speaking tour, Trump did describe his usual cabal of supporters to have been frighteningly violent during the election campaign period.
“You people were…screaming ‘Where’s the wall? We want the wall!’ Screaming, ‘Prison! Prison! Lock her up!’ I mean you are going crazy. I mean, you were nasty and mean and vicious and you wanted to win, right?” The President-elect asked his audience that evening who were engaging, in a slightly subdued way, in the very actions he had mentioned. He was of course referring to a couple of his harsh campaign promises: his grand plan to build a wall dividing the Continental US from Mexico and forcing their southern neighbor to foot the bill, and the threat of having a specially-appointed prosecutor throwing his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in prison for her own indiscretions.
The key word here is “subdued” as in the mandated calls for the wall and locking up Clinton were not was vile as before the polls. This was what Trump was trying to seize on regarding his camp. “But now, you’re mellow and you’re cool and you’re not nearly as vicious or violent, right?” He asked his listeners again. “Because we won, right? Now you’re sort of laying back...you’re basking in the glory of victory.”
If Trump felt fully confident that his voters have mellowed down their fiery sloganizing now that he’s won, it didn’t quite jive with what went on in the audience. Even as he went on with his address, a Trump supporter demanded that not only should Clinton be jailed, but that she also be subjected to the dreaded water-board torture. Another fan also took offense at the media coverage during the event and threw a water bottle at a reporter, along with the insult “trash”.
Sound ominous indeed for the coming administration of President Trump.
