Two days from now, on June 15, Philippine Airlines, the country’s national flag carrier, will begin flying its newest international route between Manila and Saipan. This has been something that Filipino kababayans who have long viewed PAL as their airline of choice for international flights have been waiting for a long time. The forthcoming service will provide an easier access between Manila and Saipan, along with other destinations – 29 domestic and 43 international – that the airline flies to.
PAL President and COO Jaime J. Bautista commented on the new Manila-Saipan route, “The service is much awaited by our countrymen working in the island-territory of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas. With Filipinos comprising close to 36% or 22,000 of the population, the planned flights will provide them a convenient link to their home country…Travelers from Manila can fly to Saipan and enjoy some sun and sea as well as various forms of nature adventure. On the other hand, Saipan residents may now experience the PAL brand of service and enjoy Manila for a few days before flying to other parts of the archipelago.”
Saipan is the latest addition to the PAL route network, with a 4-hour 15-minute travel time on the bi-class Airbus A320 (12 business & 144 economy). Just this year the airline has also opened other international routes to Doha (Qatar), Jeddah (SA) and Kuwait, while the previous year inaugurated flights to Port Moresby (PNG), Jinjiang (CHN), New York City, Cairns (AUS), Auckland (NZ), and a Cebu-Los Angeles service – this one on Philippine Airlines’ 75 th anniversary on March 15.
Travelers can now enjoy a fast flight to experience the gentle Pacific beaches of Saipan. Or, if your eyes are wandering a bit more southward, the Manila-Cairns- Auckland flight (inaugurated December 2, 2015) could be more your speed, giving you a choice of stopping by for a few days at northern and tropical Australia (yes, tropical) which is not far from the natural and immense wonder of the Great Barrier Reef, then hurry on the next PAL flight – on the same ticket! – to the largest city in New Zealand, from which you can enjoy the many sailing vessels at sea, the blend of European and native Maori cultures, or maybe just head on by to “Middle-Earth” via the Hobbiton Movie Set used in filming “The Lord of the Rings”.
PR 1571 departs Manila every Wednesday and Sunday at 9:20PM and arrives in Saipan at 3:35AM local time. PR 1572 departs Saipan every Monday and Thursday at 4:35AM and arrives in Manila at 6:45AM.
