For a blackberry loyalist like me, news like this couldn't get any better! Viber, (www.viber.com) is known to be as the leading mobile communications platform that offers free messaging and HD-quality phone calls. Yesterday as major companies in the US announced its first quarter earnings, Viber announced the release of their redesigned iPhone app that is suited for iOS 7.  Viber also announced a new mobile app for BlackBerry 10.

For our iPhone release we took our cue from the clean, flat look of iOS 7, we wanted Viber to feel like a completely seamless part of the device,” said Talmon Marco, CEO of Viber. “Our BlackBerry 10 app is a beautiful twist on our design delivering the most up to date experience for our users.”
Both the iPhone and BlackBerry apps have been enhanced with powerful new features that expand the functionality of the platform. Importantly, Viber 4.2 for iPhone allows users to send multiple photos and videos at the same time and create a block list of unwanted numbers or contacts.

  • Send longer video messages
  • Show status when a user “is typing on" Android Tablet, Linux, Mac, PC or Windows 8 
  • Bug fixes

Rocco Nacino

For some reason, I couldn’t stop smiling editing this video interview with Rocco Nacino. I never thought it could be this smooth and conversational considering it was our first encounter.

Prior to the interview, I kinda hated him. He was so effective on his last soap #AkinParinAngBukas that I thought he was the same person as the one he portrayed. Arrogant and Boastful. But I was very wrong. Rocco is actually one of the sweetest and nicest celebrities I have ever met. He talks with sense and charm.

It took me 3 years to realize why he was so loved by GMA and by many.  Other than being a good actor, there’s still more about him. A confessed mama’s boy who already started changing the way he lives, from a bad boy to a more focus and determined person.

Rocco can effortlessly turn anyone’s bad mood into a happy one. His smile is more than enough to make the people around him love and like him.

The interview took place at Microtel Hotel in Gensan a couple of weeks ago. Forgive me that it took a while before I am able to post this exclusive 30 minute video interview. I was so busy with many clients that I couldn’t squeeze it in. Rocco was so game with all the questions I threw at him. His honesty was so commendable that he wouldn’t care sharing his thoughts and all the good things happening in his life even if they weren’t really for public consumption. Haha! I will have to edit out some, as a respect and for his protection.

Rocco is Enrico Raphael Nacino in real life. He is a Registered Nurse even prior to joining GMA7’s Startruck. He recently celebrated his 27th birthday with the students of Makati High School and gave the school’s library an Internet and Wifi.

Rocco’s most remarkable performance was ‘Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa ‘ that gave him a Breakthrough Performance by An Actor Award and New Movie Actor Award from the Golden Screen Awards and PMPC Star Awards for Movies respectively.

Gloc-9’s Myx Music Awards bodes well for mainstream Pinoy music

Gloc-9 won four major awards in the Myx Music Awards 2014 (MMA2014), the most for any artist who was nominated.

But what is more important about this win, is not so much the fact that Gloc-9 won in four out of six categories that he was nominated in, nor that he won four times more than any other artist.

It is that Gloc-9 won it for a song like “Magda.”

The idea of Magdalena is not new. The legend that is Freddie Aguilar introduced us to “Magdalena” in the early 1980’s, a folk song about the plight of a girl who was misunderstood because of the work she was forced into doing. In the Aguilar song, Magdalena is seen as “sawimpalad,” living a wretched life, where her story is one of choicelessness.

Gloc-9’s “Magda” does not point a finger at this woman’s life. The songwriter tells this story with compassion and understanding. Spoken from the perspective of her childhood sweetheart Ernesto, the story is allowed its romance, as it is allowed its heartbreak and undoing. Because Ernesto speaks of Magda, we are given the chance to see Magda as a spit of a girl, as someone who left her childhood behind. In the present she is a woman who is trapped in the cage of her own doing.

The song does not judge Magda, as it does make her human. She is treated as solitary and independent, she is allowed her own individuality, her own voice.

This is Gloc-9 at his most creative, where his decision to use another character to speak about Magda allows for a distance, a non-judgmental stance about her character. It is this creativity that was awarded by the MMA this year. But more importantly what they were honoring was this rapper-songwriter-artist’s decision to tell a story we would rather not hear, of a woman we would rather be blind to.

And this is really the value of Gloc-9’s quadruple wins in this year’s MMAs. He won for the song “Magda” in the context of mainstream original Pilipino music that makes hits out of repetitive lovesongs and novelty. He won for “Magda” at a time when the originality and relevance of original Pilipino pop music is being questioned.

Each MYX Music Award is composed of 60% audience votes and 40% artist or peer votes. And on a year when Gloc-9 wins big for a song like “Magda,” we are being told how the audience and the members of the industry as well, are in fact ready for difficult stories and complex songs.


Winning those four MMAs for “Magda,” as such, is not just a measure of Gloc-9 as artist. It is a measure of what the audience of local music is ready for. One hopes original Pinoy mainstream music heeds this call for creativity and relevance.
